Governance, environment and transparency: AI4GOV's concrete results

The European research project AI4Gov - coordinated by the Maggioli Group - aims to explore the possibilities of integrating Artificial Intelligence into public institutions.

The European project AI4GOV has charted a clear course for the integration of Artificial Intelligence within public institutions. This is not merely about automation, but about "Trusted AI": technology that is transparent, unbiased, and oriented toward the common good. The project’s two primary pilots offer a complementary vision of this digital revolution.

Badajoz: AI Preserving Resources
In the Province of Badajoz (Spain), AI has become the "guardian" of the water cycle. The key technical evidence emerged from the project is the ability to transform massive volumes of data from IoT sensors into actionable predictive maintenance strategies.

  • The Result: a significant reduction in water waste and optimized energy consumption. This provides policymakers with high-precision tools to manage environmental crises, such as droughts, with unprecedented accuracy.

Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni: AI ensuring equity
In Greece, the pilot focused on waste management and urban mobility, addressing one of AI's most complex challenges: the risk of algorithmic discrimination.

  • The Result: by implementing the ‘Bias Detector Toolkit’, the administration was able to monitor its data-driven policies, ensuring that resource allocation and urban services were distributed fairly. By correcting distortions in the source data, the project touched upon the essence of Explainable AI (XAI): making every machine-generated suggestion both understandable and justifiable.

Jožef Stefan Institute: AI that strengthens global responsibility
In Slovenia, the Jožef Stefan Institute leveraged AI4Gov to push the boundaries of ethical, transparent, and globally coordinated AI for sustainable development. Its work addressed not only local policy needs but also the international frameworks that shape how AI is governed.

  • The results: strengthening the IRCAI Top100 platform initiative for SDG‑aligned solutions by enhancing evaluation methods and providing self-assessment tools; creating an SDG Observatory that turns complex datasets into intuitive visualizations by improving data completeness, transparency, and fairness; providing policymakers with valuable insights into how different SDG topics are being addressed at the policy level by analysing OECD’s global repository of AI policy documents.

The Gruppo Maggioli Vision
As both coordinators and technological partners, our role has been that of enablers: we have built the bridge between academic research and the operational reality of local authorities.
"The success of AI4GOV lies in the creation of tools that keep the human-in-the-loop throughout the decision-making process," comments the Group’s Research & Development team. "In Badajoz, we safeguarded the environment; in Greece, we protected democratic values. This is the GovTech we believe in."

As the project reaches its conclusion, the developed solutions remain available to an Europe determined to lead the digital transition with responsibility and vision.
